Ladies, how many times have you heard…
Smile it may never happen…
According to Debrett’s A-Z of Modern Manners :
- All too often smiling provokes cynicism, because it is used to mask negativity.
- The vulpine smile of the salesman as they hover on the edge of a deal.
- The insincere grimace of the flight attendant as they dole out another
hotrancid meal.
- The meaningless teeth-baring of the customer service representative who has no intention of serving any customer.
Sinister huh?
Debrett’s continues:
- Within the context of manners, smiling is often the armour of genial politeness we put on to see us through all sorts of social situations.
- As such, we could be accused of insincerity, but surely smiling is better, kinder,more attractive than the panoply of frowns and boredom.
- Remember that smiles are infectious-and spreading a little infectious happiness can only be a good thing.
- So Ladies, in the New Year after the Christmas celebrations seem like a hazy blur and your credit card has taken a hammering…
- Just smile gracefully.
- After all it may already have happened…

Ladies, remember how enamored we were with the Selfridges window display?
- Well this week we got up close and personal with Harrods Crystal Christmas…
- This seven-window long display inspired by Swarovski features a glittering woodland scene of sparkling trees and glittering hedgerow, dripping with Swarovski gems.
- Frosty branches are wrapped with garlands of twinkling lights, and mannequins hang from the trees in dramatic poses.
- Equally stunning was the Ralph and Russo Swarovski encrusted gown.
- Taking inspiration from the 1920′s flapper era and crafted with over 150,000 Swarovski crystals, this hand stitched couture piece hovers around the £230K price mark..
Ladies even though we found the Narnia like window display eerily erotic and wouldn’t necessarily associate it with Christmas, it was spectacular to look at...

Ladies did you know that elegance isn’t always difficult to attain?
According to the Lady’s Book of Manners ;
A girl with neatly and properly dressed feet, with neat,
Well fitting gloves, smoothly arranged hair and a clean, well made dress,
Who walks well and speaks well, and above all, acts politely and kindly, is a lady,
And no wealth is required here.
Sometimes, it’s the little things that count….

Selfridges Winter Wonderland

In preparation of the festive season we’ve been out and about in search of the most inspiring Christmas 2011 window displays.
First stop Selfridges which is making history as part of its White Christmas campaign by launching a revolutionary window display.
- Its street windows play re-engineered carols without the need for loudspeakers or sound-preserving booths.
- Instead each window is effectively turned into an enchanting and oversized music box.
- To our surprise, the music system plays music through, not from, the windows – using the glass pane itself as a loudspeaker!
- Additionally, the system is devised in such a way that although each window plays a different tune, customers are able to listen to the track without interference from the music being played through the next window.
How amazing is that?
- And nestled amongst this all white extravaganza : a festoon of goodies from the store…
- Selfridges crystal clear Christmas concept – part eerie, part frosty and part magical is the brainchild of Condiment Junkie a branding and experiential consultancy.

Ladies, have you wondered what it means to be really happy or what forms the basis of human happiness?
I guess that we are constantly asking ourselves that question..
The Lady’s Book of Manners observation is elegant and succinct…
- The basis of human happiness is truth: without this virtue, there is no reliance upon language
- No confidence in friendship and no security in promises and oaths.
- Truth is always consistent with itself and needs nothing to help it out.
- It is always near at hand and sits upon our lips and is ready to drop out before we are aware.
- Whereas a lie is troublesome, and sets a lady’s invention on the rack.
- And one trick needs a good many more of the same kind to make it good…
